Book Recommendation: The Disturbed Girl’s Dictionary by NoNieqa Ramos

November 5, 2020 by Super ELA

At the end of October, I found myself without power in a cabin in the woods. (Thank you, Hurricane Zeta!) This was fine during the day, as I spent the sunlit hours hiking along beautiful trails with my dogs, Chloe and Jules. At night, however, it was less than convenient. BOOK RECOMMENDATION: Have you ever read a book that you just can’t stop thinking about and you want the world to read it so that you can talk about it together? That was my experience recently with The Disturbed Girl’s Dictionary by @nonieqa.ramos. I downloaded it on a whim to pass the time during a power outage, and I found myself immediately captivated. The narrator is 15-year-old Macy Cashmere, and she tells her story of coping with poverty and violence in a style that is at once vulnerable, confrontational, honest, profane, and poetic. This is a book that belongs in schools, sharing shelf space with, as Macy writes it, “Shakesbeer.” If you’re looking for your next read, I can’t recommend Ramos’s work enough.
As we wait for the results of the election to trickle in, I can’t help but think about new beginnings and how to start them. When it comes to writing, all you need are three components: a hook, a transition, and a thesis. When it comes to life and politics... well, that’s a touch more challenging.
I’m so excited to share this comic, which came out of a collaboration with Ty Rickers of @super_powered_punctuation. His comics tell the story of the Punctuators, a team of heroes who fight bad grammar and punctuation with their respective super skills. We worked together to create their newest foe: The Dangling Moodifier!
I’m working on something SO COOL right now, but I can’t share it until closer to Halloween. 🎃 So, instead, I’ll share this free handout that’s currently available on my website to help students master the semicolon.
